Task 1: Integrated Writing Task
Test takers read a short text on an academic topic of about 230–300 words (3 minutes of reading time).
The reading passage then disappears during the lecture; it reappears when the test takers are ready to begin writing so they can refer to it as they work.

Task 2: Independent Writing
Test takers are required to write an essay in which they state, explain, and support their position on an issue.
Rather than simply listing personal preferences or choices, test takers must develop support for their opinions or choices.
Typical essay questions start with statements like:
- Do you agree or disagree with the statement below? To back up your answer, use reasons and specific details.
- Some people believe M. Other people believe Y. Which of these two positions do you prefer/agree with? Give reasons and specific details.
An effective essay will typically contain at least 300 words; however, test takers may write more if they so desire.
