TOEFL SPEAKING

To achieve the highest possible score in the Speaking Section, your responses must meet the requirements of the task with only minor errors or lapses. The test graders are looking for a conversation that is both understandable and sustained.

SPEAKING PATTERN

  • Length of Task: 1-4 minutes long each
  • Number of Tasks: 4
  • Questions: 1 question per task; 4 questions in total
  • Total Time: 17 minutes
  • Avg. Time per Question: 45-60 seconds for the speaking part of each question
  • When Questions will appear: After the test taker is done with reading and listening material

Independent Tasks

Personal Preference

This question asks the test taker to express and defend a personal preference from a given category, such as significant people or places, or events or activities that the test taker enjoys.
Time to prepare: 15 seconds
Time to respond: 45 seconds

Choice

This question requires the test taker to choose and justify a personal choice between two opposing behaviours or courses of action.
Time to prepare: 15 seconds
45 seconds for a response

Integrated Tasks

Read/Listen/Speak

Situation on Campus Fit and Explain is the topic.
A reading passage (75–100 words) discusses a topic related to campus.
A listening passage (60–80 seconds, 150–180 words) responds to the reading’s topic.

The test taker is asked to summarise the speaker’s point of view within the context of the reading passage.

Time to prepare: 30 seconds

60 seconds for a response

Academic Course Topic: General/Specific

A reading passage (75–100 words) defines a term, process, or idea from an academic subject in broad terms.
An excerpt from a lecture (60–90 seconds; 150–220 words) provides examples and specific information to illustrate the reading passage’s term, process, or idea.
The question requires the test taker to combine and convey key information from the reading passage and lecture.
