What constitutes a good TOEFL written response? The topic of the essay should be effectively addressed. The response should be well-organized and well-developed, with relevant explanations and detailed supporting documentation. It should also demonstrate unity, progression, and coherence. If you want to get a high writing score, make sure you show syntactic variety and appropriate word choice.
TOEFL Writing Purposes
Information Processing – You must be able to synthesise and summarise what you have read in your textbooks as well as what you have heard in and out of class.
Formation of Opinions – You must form your own opinion in response to the information you have processed.
Delivery – Your essay should have a clear main idea and a good structure, with well-developed ideas backed up by coherent evidence. Observe the
Language Use – Your essay should show that you know how to use grammar and vocabulary correctly.
Topic Development – The length, tone, and conclusion of your essay should be appropriate. There must be a clear progression of ideas with effective linking words (transitional phrases).
TOEFL Writing Format
The TOEFL writing portion contains two types of questions, the first is an integrated task that combines reading, listening, and writing. You will have 20 minutes to complete this task.
The second question is an independent writing task that takes 30 minutes to complete. Test takers are allowed to take notes on the reading passage. Responses are typed into the computer and sent to ETS’ Online Score Network.
