OET SPEAKING

MARKING FORMAT

Each Assessor scores your performance on the Speaking sub-test based on nine criteria. Intelligibility, Fluency, Appropriateness of Language, and Grammar and Expression Resources are the four linguistically oriented criteria. They are graded on a scale of 0 to 6.

What exactly is the OET Speaking subtest?
The OET Speaking sub-test is one of four components of the OET examination. Listening, Reading, and Writing are the other components.

What is the purpose of the OET Speaking in this format?
The reasoning behind assessing OET Speaking through role plays is to simulate real-life workplace situations that candidates are likely to encounter. This helps candidates prepare for professional practise.

How many tasks must I complete for the OET Speaking?
For the OET Speaking, you will need to complete two role-playing tasks. These are two distinct questions.

In OET Speaking, how much time do I have for each role?
You will have 3 minutes to prepare and 5 minutes to perform the role play for each question. There will be two questions totalling
approximately 16 minutes [3 minutes (preparation) + 5 minutes (role play) X two role plays]. However, if you include time for physical movement and setting up, the entire process could take 20-25 minutes.

Who will grade my OET Speaking exam?
During the test, your role-play interaction will be recorded and sent to the examiners. The person with whom you are role-playing
is merely an interlocutor and will not be awarding you marks for the OET Speaking. Instead, your exam will be graded by two separate examiners to ensure objectivity and fairness.

What is the minimum score required to pass the OET Speaking?
OET scores range from 0-500 for each component, and OET Speaking scores are the same. Passing scores may differ depending on the organisation to which you intend to submit your OET scores, but in general, most organisations or healthcare boards will accept scores of 350 or higher.
