IELTS– INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM

IELTS is designed to test the language ability of people who come from a non-native background, who want to study, work or live, where English is used as the language of communication.

What is the main purpose of taking the IELTS?

IELTS –International English Language Testing System is a standardized English language proficiency test, which is used to test and access the skills in English –Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking skills of non-native English speakers who wish to study, work or live in an English speaking country.

Why is IELTS important?

The IELTS is an International English Proficiency test that is taken by students who wish to pursue their higher education or secure a job, and also for candidates who wish to migrate to another country on a permanent residence visa status. This test was brought into effect by all countries across the globe to test the English proficiency skills in –Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking &oral fluency for effective communication.

Is the IELTS testing Mandatory?

Taking the IELTS is not mandatory, neither is it required by all countries and universities for the purpose of overseas education. But as an individual if you are going for an overseas study or on a job visa or on an immigration permanent residence visa to another country it is good to do the IELTS exam and gain a good score as the overall band score is 9 bands, so a student should score at least 6 and above or get an overall score of 7 to 7.5 if you are going in for a master’s program.For candidates who wish to migrate or go on a permanent residence visa to another country the Band scores level required are 7 and above or 8 and above to help you with your visa process.

There are 4 modules in the IELTS exam

The IELTS test has 2 modules – IELTS Academic & IELTS General

The IELTS Academic is designed for those students who wish to pursue their higher education abroad and to enroll in universities and colleges or other institutions of higher studies and for professionals such as doctors, engineers, nurses, etc. who want to serve in English speaking countries, or to study, work or live abroad.

The IELTS General test is designed for those candidates who wish to migrate or go on and permanent residence visa (PR) to another country or on a Job Placement visa.

IELTS – 4 Modules Exam format:

IELTS General

  • Listening: 40 minutes

(30 minutes to listen to the audio, 10 minutes to transfer the answers from the question paper to an answer sheet)

  • Reading: 60 minutes – (3 passages) as the passage goes, the level of difficult tasks will be increasing.
  • Writing: 2 tasks / 60 minutes

Task 1–3 types of letters are given (formal, informal, semi-formal) time limit is 20 minutes, to be completed in 150 words.

Task 2 – Essay writing a topic will be given, in order to write 250 words limit – 40 minutes time duration

  • Speaking: 11-14 minutes / 3 sections

Section 1 – A personal introduction about yourself Section 2– A topic will be given for the Cue Card, Section 3- Discussion topics

  • IELTS  Academic 4 modules
    • Listening: 40 minutes – (30minutes to listen to the audio 10 minutes to transfer the answers to an answer sheet)
    • Reading: 60 minutes -(Given 3 passages) as the passage goes the level of difficulty will be increasing
    • Writing: 2 tasks / 60 minutes

Task 1 – Picture writing – the time limit given is 20 minutes to write 150 words on different pictures and images.

Task 2 – Essay writing – a topic will be given, in order to assess your writing skills, you will have to write 250 words within 40 minutes

  • Speaking : 11-14mins / 3 sections

Section 1– Self-introduction, Section -2 will be the Cue Card, Section -3 is a discussion

Age limit Criteria?

There is no age limit to attempt the IELTS test, nor has IDP (Australia) set an age bar, students below 16 are not allowed to attempt the IELTS.

Educational institutions, employers, professional registration bodies, and all government immigration agencies require proof of the English language proficiency skills as part of their admission process in their university or college, or for job recruitment or immigration procedures.   • Candidates below the age of 18 years need their parents or guardian to book the test for them.

IELTS Exam Cancellation- points to be taken into account

  • If you cancel your IELTS application 5 weeks ahead, the student or candidate will receive a refund minus a 25% administrator fee.
  • If a student or candidate cancels their exam date, you will receive no refund.
  • In case you fail to attend the exam then this will also be considered as a cancellation and there will be no refund.
  • If a student or candidate is unable to attend the exam or is ill, they can cancel their exam on medical grounds and can produce a medical certificate, 5 days before the test date; this will help them to receive the refund after deducting the local administration fee.
