An Overview of the Absolute Grading System
In an absolute grading system, a student’s final mark is determined solely by their individual achievement, rather than their ranking relative to other students in the class.
Each specific letter grade is linked to a fixed percentage range that is established by the institution (university). If a student’s score falls within that predetermined range, they receive that corresponding grade, regardless of how many other students achieved the same result.
Implementation in Korean Universities
Historically, many South Korean universities utilized relative grading (often called “grading on a curve”), particularly for large introductory undergraduate courses.
However, many institutions have transitioned to, or now permit, absolute grading policies in an effort to decrease student stress and enhance fairness within specific types of courses:
- Graduate level programs
- Smaller class sizes
- Courses that rely heavily on research or project-based evaluations
The Grading System in Korea
Korean to U.S. Grade Comparison
In Korean universities, grades can be roughly matched to U.S. grading standards.
- A+ or A generally corresponds to a U.S. A, typically within the 90–100% range.
- B+ or B aligns with a U.S. B, covering about 80–89%.
- C+ or C equates to a U.S. C, usually 70–79%.
- D+ or D matches a U.S. D, around 60–69%.
- F represents a failing mark, meaning below 60%.
Cost to study in Korea
The fee is usually given in Korean Won and can also be converted to USD which is common in universities.
International Students pay INR 2.5 to 10 lakhs ( per year for undergraduate degrees and around INR 3 to 25 lakhs for postgraduate degrees. As such, public universities are more affordable than private ones.
The fee for International students in Korea is USD 2000 to USD 7500 approximately. The tuition fee is comparatively less when compared to the UK, USA and other Western countries, and at the same time offering world class education with a handsome salary package.
