The advantage of this exam is that the candidate can apply for the preliminary exam when he or she is in his/her final year although the eligibility of the candidate is a graduate degree from an UGC approved university .The minimum age is 18 and there is no age limit for BC, BCM, SC, and ST whereas for other castes the maximum age limit is 30. For Group 2A, the candidate applying for a personal clerk is required to pass the Government Technical Examination in Shorthand (Typewriting) in both Tamil and English by higher grade.

Two papers will be there for candidates where they have type 1 in which they will have General Tamil and type 2 in which they have General English from which they can choose any one of the type whereas the rest will be the same for both the Types(AMA and General Studies).
For Typist and Steno-Typist, Grade III, the candidates are required to pass S.S.L.C Public Examination. The technical qualification for typist is to have higher senior or junior grade in any one of the languages (Tamil / English). However, the candidate should have at least the lower or junior grade in other languages (Tamil/ English) and should have passed The Government Technical Examination in Typewriting. The candidates are also required to pass the “Computer on Office Automation” as their technical qualification. The minimum age limit is 18 and it varies according to the caste divisions. for BC, BCM, it is 32 and for SC, and ST, ST(A), DW, it is 35 whereas for other castes the maximum age limit is 30.
