The New GRE Syllabus What’s In and What’s Out

The New GRE Syllabus: What’s In and What’s Out (2025)?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) has evolved to meet the changing demands of global universities and modern test-takers. With recent updates continuing into 2025, the exam is now more streamlined, time-efficient, and student-friendly.

At TICSE – The Immaculate Training & Consulting, we ensure our students stay ahead with updated preparation strategies aligned to the latest GRE pattern. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what’s included in the new GRE syllabus and what has been removed.

What is the GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a globally recognized standardized test required for admission to many master’s and doctoral programs, especially in countries like the USA, Canada, and parts of Europe.

It evaluates three key skills:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Analytical Writing

What’s in the New GRE Syllabus (2025):

The updated GRE keeps its core academic focus but is now shorter and more efficient.

1. Verbal Reasoning (Still Core)

The verbal section continues to test:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Text completion
  • Sentence equivalence

Focus Areas:

  • Academic vocabulary
  • Logical reasoning
  • Critical analysis of passages

At THE IMMACULATE, we emphasize smart vocabulary-building techniques rather than memorizing endless word lists.

2. Quantitative Reasoning (No Major Concept Changes)

The math syllabus remains largely the same and covers:

  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Data analysis

Important

There is no advanced calculus or high-level mathematics. The GRE tests clarity of concepts and logical problem-solving rather than complicated formulas.

3. Analytical Writing (One Essay Only)

What Changed?

Previously, the GRE had two essays:

  • Analyze an Issue
  • Analyze an Argument

What’s New?

Now, the GRE includes only ONE essay task:

  • Analyze an Issue

This significantly reduces test time and preparation stress.

What’s out of the GRE (Removed or Reduced)?

1. Analyze an Argument Essay Remover

This section is no longer part of the exam.

2. Reduced Test Duration

The GRE is now approximately 1 hour 58 minutes, compared to nearly 4 hours earlier.

3. Unscored and Research Sections Removed

Previously, students had extra unscored sections. These are no longer included.

Updated GRE Exam Structure (2025):-

Section Number of Sections Durations
Analytical Writing 1 30 minutes
Verbal Reasoning 2 41 minutes total
Quantitative Reasoning 2 47 minutes total

The test is now shorter but equally competitive.

Why the GRE Changed?

The exam authorities revised the GRE to:

  • Reduce student fatigue
  • Improve focus and performance
  • Align better with graduate program expectations
  • Make the test more accessible globally

This makes preparation more strategic rather than lengthy.

How should students prepare for the New GRE?

At TICSE – The Immaculate Training & Consulting, we recommend:

✔ Concept Clarity over Rote Learning

Understanding the logic and structure matters more than the memorization.

✔ Focused Vocabulary Strategy

Learn high-frequency GRE words in context.

✔ Timed Practice

With reduced duration, speed and accuracy are critical.

✔ Essay Structuring Skills

Since there is only one essay, scoring high in it becomes more important.

Is the New GRE Easier?

The exam is shorter, but not easier.

Competition remains strong, and universities still use GRE scores to assess analytical and academic readiness.

However, the new format benefits students who:

• Manage time well
• Have strong reasoning skills
• Prepare strategically

Final Thoughts from THE IMMACULATE:

The 2025 GRE format is designed for efficiency and clarity. Students who understand the updated pattern and prepare smartly will have a competitive advantage.

At TICSE – The Immaculate Training & Consulting, we provide:

  • Updated syllabus training
  • Structured mock tests
  • Expert verbal and quantitative mentoring
  • Personalized performance analysis

If you are planning to take the GRE in 2025, now is the right time to start structured preparation with THE IMMACULATE.
