Tips to Improve IELTS Writing

Tips to Improve IELTS Writing

Here are practical, safe tips to improve IELTS Writing without risking plagiarism, whether you’re aiming for Band 6 or Band 8+.

  1. Stop Memorizing Essays (This Is the #1 Trap)

Examiners are trained to spot memorized or recycled content.

Instead:

  • Memorize structures, not essays
  • Learn idea frameworks (causes–effects, advantages–disadvantages, problems–solutions)

👉 Example (Task 2 structure):

  • Introduction (paraphrase + opinion)
  • Body 1 (main idea + example)
  • Body 2 (second idea + example)
  • Conclusion (summary + opinion)
  1. Paraphrase Like a Human, Not a Thesaurus 🤖

Overusing fancy synonyms = unnatural writing + plagiarism risk.

Bad paraphrasing:

People → individuals
Important → paramount
Problem → predicament

Good paraphrasing strategies:

  • Change sentence structure
  • Change word form (verb → noun)
  • Use common, accurate vocabulary

Example:

Original: Many people think online education is beneficial.
Paraphrase: Online learning is considered useful by many learners.

✔ Natural
✔ Safe
✔ Examiner-friendly

  1. Build Your Own “IELTS Vocabulary Bank”

Instead of copying phrases from model answers, create personal phrases.

Example:

  • “One major reason for this trend is…”
  • “This can be clearly seen in…”
  • “From my perspective…”

These are safe, common expressions, not plagiarism.

📌 Tip: Keep a notebook of collocations, not single words:

  • heavy traffic
  • rapid development
  • social pressure
  1. Practice Writing Ideas, Not Perfect Language ✍️

Many candidates fail because they focus on grammar first.

Better method:

  1. Brainstorm ideas (2–3 minutes)
  2. Write clearly
  3. Check grammar last

IELTS prefers:
✔ Clear ideas
✔ Logical flow
✔ Relevant examples

Not Shakespeare-level English 😄

  1. Use Real-Life Examples (Your Own!)

Plagiarism happens when examples are copied.

Safe examples:

  • Your country
  • Your city
  • Your education or work experience
  • General, believable situations

Example:

In my country, public transport is often unreliable, which forces people to rely on private vehicles.

  1. Learn Sentence Patterns, Not Sentences

Memorize grammar templates instead of content.

Examples:

  • One reason why X happens is that…
  • This leads to several consequences, such as…
  • If this trend continues, it may result in…

You fill in the ideas → 100% original writing.

  1. Rewrite Model Answers (Safely)

Model answers are useful only if you rewrite them completely.

Try this exercise:

  1. Read a model answer
  2. Close the book
  3. Write the same idea in your own way

This trains:

  • Paraphrasing
  • Grammar
  • Original expression
  1. Get Feedback (Even Once Helps!)

Self-checking misses a lot.

Focus feedback on:

  • Task response
  • Coherence
  • Grammar patterns you repeat
  • Vocabulary misuse

Even 2–3 corrected essays can raise your band score noticeably.

  1. Think Like an Examiner 🧠

Examiners ask:

  • Is the idea clear?
  • Is the language natural?
  • Is this candidate thinking independently?

They don’t ask:

  • “Is this impressive vocabulary?”

Quick Summary

✅ Learn structures
✅ Use simple, accurate English
✅ Create your own examples
✅ Avoid memorized essays
✅ Practice paraphrasing naturally
